BMW is showing us flames with all latest X models and just when we thought we’ve seen it all with the releases of the X2 and X4 earlier this year, comes the all new BMWX5, styled by Luxurious Authority….BOSS
The Muscular looking new X5 has the typical X cornerstone design and the first thing you notice is its large kidney grille, the striking blue eyes (inside the headlight cluster) surrounded by C-shaped daytime running lights and LED headlights (Laserlight optional). The LED headlights have been improved with a +500m visibility (double vision), allowing one to see road signs at night as clear as you would see during the day (that’s pretty epic) . The front apron with large air intakes, gives it that self-assured presence adding robustness and making the entire front look BOSS.
The side has a balanced sovereignty (aka Authority just in case you don’t get it) with bold character lines along the flanks. Alloy wheels range from 18inch to 22inch in size depending on model and specification. The rear looks wide with LED taillights in a 3D layout, roof spoiler and manly looking twin exhaust either side of a robust looking mid insert (off-road design style in standard models). The X5 design lines start off with the xLine package with the M Sport Package offered as an option. Off road buyers are also catered for by the xOff Road package. The xLine, M Sport and xOffroad currently only come in the xDrive 30d. Topping the local X5 range is the M50d which gets the M Performance Design package as standard for a sportier look. M-Performance Parts in Carbon Fibre finish can be added for that additional racing look on all M Sport or the M50d.
The spacious interior has been significantly pimped to be your very own ‘Business Amusement Park’. The dashboard layout is functional with a high quality fit and finish. The large infotainment system has touchscreen capability, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, multi-USB charging ports, wireless charging, Gesture control etc. with a 7.0 operating system which can be updated via Wi-Fi.. The digital instrument cluster can be complemented by the optional Live Cockpit Professional (aka heads up display) showing speed limit, current speed, navigation, speed limit warnings as well as indicating obstruction ahead. The front cupholders have an awesome cooling or warming functionality.
The M50d driven at launch had a glass finish Gear lever option giving it that extra class. The panoramic glass roof (called Sky Lounge by BMW) creates an airy, spacious feel when fully open. M Sport models get sporty interior accents including sports seats. Optional extras on X5s include massaging function for the driver and passenger, rear entertainment system and an additonal 3rd row of seats (Yoh, surely this is more than just a car? see why I said its a Business amusement park earlier). The split tail-gate is electonically controlled for added convenience. The boot capacity is 650 lts which can be increased to 1870 lts when the rear seats are folded.
The xDrive30d has a 3.0litre in-line 6 cylinder TwinPower diesel credited with 195kW/ 620Nm for a 0-100km sprint in 6.5 seconds (230km/h tops speed). Fuel efficiency is claimed at 6.8l/100km for this model. The M50d has a 3.0litre in-line 6 cylinder TwinPower diesel with 4 Turbos making 294kW /760Nm. This means it sprints from 0-100km in 5.2 seconds topping at a limited 250km/h top speed. Fuel efficiency is claimed at 7.2l/100km for this model. All models come standard with xDrive (All-wheels-drive) linked to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission.
The launch drive proved that the new X5 is extremely comfortable and certainly drives like a BOSS, taking full authority on the road and even steering for you at certain times on the road (Optional). The xDrive30d proved exceptionally awesome off road, tackling all slips and glides like a boss (that word Boss used again). The M50d is much quicker on the road with a sportier feel. The optional air-suspension can be altered for enhanced ride refinement or a sportier feel by lowering and raising the ride height at the press of a button.
BMW will release the X5 Plug-in hybrid later in 2019 as well as a BMW Digital key which works on Samsung phones (soon to be on Apple too) where a chip is activated onto the phone to open the car, lock the car and even drive without the key present as long as the chip is in the phone. You can choose to have up to 5 people to access this chip onto their phones and this Digital key would be available from March 2019.
