The Golf GTI is one of the iconic hatchbacks in Mzansi fusing hot looks, street cred, high build quality, practicality, spacious interior and good performance in an all-round package. As a perfect send-off for the Golf 7.5, VW Mzansi has launched the TCR version of the GTI. Only 300 units were allocated to Mzansi, first come first Vrrrrpaaa.
TCR stands for Touring Car Racing (see racing version above), as if you needed more street cred on top of the GTI name. It might be confusing to see a new launch of the Golf 7.5 when we have seen the Golf 8 GTI launched globally. Well, the Golf 8 GTI is still coming to Mzansi in 2021 (thank Covid-19 for the delay) but for now, the TCR will keep the fire burning.
What fire it is, with 213kW/380Nm coming from the 2.0-litre TFSI 4-cylinder engine (only 15kW less than the Golf R). This means the GTI TCR scorches from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds. VW chose to remove the speed limiter meaning the fun doesn’t stop at 250km/h but 264km/h is where Vmax is at, Zasha. Drive is to the front wheels via a 6-speed DSG transmission. Suspension tricks like Dynamic Chassis Control, Electronic Limited Slip Differential makes sure owners of this hot hatch stay on the black part of the road. Unfortunately there is no Akrapovic exhaust option for the TCR, something that makes sense considering the price of that option in the Golf R and the need for GTI drivers to tune their exhausts to level 10…….VrrrrPhaaa is great when standard and OTP when tuned (and you get to keep the 3-year/120 000km warranty, 5 year/90 000km service plan if you don’t fettle with the technical stuff).
On the looks, there is the TCR body kit (front splitter, rear spoiler, diffuser) that will definitely ensure standard GTI drivers and other drivers know the new kid in the GTI stable.
19-inch wheels, LED headlights, sun-roof, large-bore chrome exhausts, matt black mirror caps come standard.
There are TCR decals on the side doors. Speaking of doors, the TCR only comes in practical 5 door configuration in Mzansi. Pure white, Tornado Red and Pure Grey are the only colour options.
Step inside and you are greeted by premium Alcantara sports seats with GTI TCR detailing. It is at this moment when the battle of the opposite sex is won GTI – Get Them Inside whilst the Get Them Intimidated gang will not lay another eye at your partner.
Alcantara door inserts & gear lever, floor mats with black and red stitching, sports steering wheel with shift paddles hint at the sporty side of this limited edition GTI. Active Info Display (Digital Speedo) and a touchscreen infotainment also come standard.
If you really want one of these special models, remember only 300 units are coming to Mzansi, you have to pay R669 000 (Vat and Emissions tax included). You better hurry though cause as soon as May starts, order books are open. I have not mentioned competitors for this model as I am sure the Hyundai 130N, Honda Type R. Renault Megane RS Trophy will get their chance to square off very soon. Keep tuned to iMotoonline for this mouth watering clash.
