Hyundai i20 facelift in Mzansi

The Korean maker takes the fight to the VW Polo in a refreshed compact hatch with style and character added to the N-Line spec.

Buyers in the compact hatch are spoilt for choice when one considers the competition between the VW Polo and the Hyundai i20. Hyundai has upped the stakes with the local launch of the facelift model.

Upfront there are changes to the grille design with the LED Daytime lights available on all models. The N-Line model has the LED Daytime lights integrated into the headlight whilst the Premium and Exdecutive have them fitted on the side air intakes. The side air intakes have been redesigned on the non N-Line models with the integrated fog lamps still available. The standard models have the Hyundai badge placed above the centre grille whilst the N-Line gets the badge on the grille itself.

The premium model gets 15 inch steel wheels (black wheel covers)whilst the Executive and N-ine get 16 inch alloy wheels in differing designs. The Executive and N-Line get a contrasting black roof. The N-Line also gets a sunroof as standard.

At the rear seas all models get redesigned LED tail lamps with the N-Line getting a spoiler. The Premium model get a grey faux diffuser for an upmarket look whilst the N-Line gets twin exhaust.

Not much change has been done to the interior with the N-Line getting the red lines around the cabin. The Premium models get faux leather/cloth combination for the seats.

The N-Line gets leather seats with red stitching and N-Line decals. The gear lever is unique to the N-Line with a sporty design.

The instrument cluster retains the clean layout with a digital info display on the centre. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are offered as standard whilst the N-Line gets wireless charger for smart phones. Air con is offered as standard across the board with the N-Line getting an automatic climate control. The N-Line gets a Bose sound system.

Rear passengers enjoy generous space with the rear seats able to fold flat should the owner want to carry additional items.

Power on all models is taken to the front wheels only. The N-Line gets a 1.0 Turbo 3-cylinder model with power outputs of 89.5kW/171Nm driven through a Dual clutch transmission. There is also a 1.2 litre engine credited with 61kW/114Nm. This engine is mated only to a 5 speed manual. There is also a 1.4 engine credited with 73kW/133Nm driving either through a 5 speed manual or auto.

If the vehicle is sold, the warranty is passed on to the next owner, thereby maximising its resale value, and generating peace of mind for the full warranty period.

A 4-year / 60 000 km service plan and 7-year / 150 000 km roadside assistance also forms part of the standard package.
