We are currently living in exciting times in terms of automotive technology. Load-shedding aside, electricity is proving to be the next step when looking at automotive propulsion. Lexus Mzansi things the same as they are making Hybrid technology more accessible with the local launch of the ES 300h in EX model.
The Lexus ES competes in the mid-size executive sedan class taking on the likes of BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 to name a few and so Lexus has armed the ES quite well. First of all the EX model retains Lexus’s metallic finish spindle-grille with vertical fin shape, LED daytime running lights in classic Lexus L-motif dominate the front. Whilst on LED technology, the EX spec ES comes standard with LED low and high beam headlamps. The lower side air intakes get chrome accents for that premium frontal look.
The side profile gets the coupe-like sloping roof whilst 17-inch alloys come standard. The lower inch wheels come with high profile tyres, something that aids the ES’s stunning ride quality, more of that later. The rear sees the ES gain a smart spoiler atop the boot lid whilst LED technology is also used for the rear lights. Overall the ES 300h EX can stand proud in any Executives parking bay.
In the cabin, the EX model grade’s interior approach combines traditional Japanese aesthetic, Takumi craftsmanship and impressive quality fit and finish. The EX grade is available with three standard Nulux (simulated leather) interior options, namely Topaz Brown, Black and Chateau. Seat warmers are standard for the driver and front passenger. Lexus Premium Audio comes with 10 speakers whilst the revised infotainment system (with an 8 –inch display) now comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Connectivity for the driver and passengers is enhanced with free Wi-fi in the ES models. The new ES 300h EX boasts niceties like park distance control with a reverse camera, a sun-roof (tilt and slide), cruise control. Safety technology comprises of driver and front passenger airbags; two driver and front passenger knee airbags; two driver and front passenger seat-mounted side-impact airbags and two front-to-rear side curtain airbags.
The ES 300h exclusively utilises Lexus’s self-charging hybrid electric system, combining an efficient 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder petrol engine working with an electric motor to produce 160kW of power. The combined-cycle fuel economy is claimed at 4.6 l/100km. The ES 300h achieves 0-100 sprint time of 8.9 seconds and top speed of 180 km/h. The ES 300h EX is available in nine exterior colours: White Quartz, Platinum Silver, Sonic Titanium, Mercury Grey, Black, Deep Blue Mica, Red Mica, Sunlight Green and Ice Ecru.
The Lexus ES 300h EX retails for R 774, 300 and joins the entry-level petrol ES 250 EX (R640, 400) and ES 300h SE (R910,900). This model joins the rest of the Lexus models with a standard and best-in-class 7-year/105 000km Warranty and Full Maintenance Plan. Vehicle service intervals are at every 15 000km, alternatively once a year.
