Mention the word RS4 and any die-hard petrolhead will pay attention, well now the latest generation has landed in Mzansi and RS enthusiasts and their families, yes it’s a stupidly fast WAGON so the dog is in on the fun as well, are rejoicing.
Station wagons are not the rage in Mzansi unless its got an RS moniker. The RS4 is an Avant (fancy Audi speak for station wagon) but the RS designers ensured it is not at all boring to look. The design is noticeably more sporty compared as the RS4 gains massive air inlets in the front apron with typical RS honeycomb structure and wide, flat Singleframe grille. Optional Matrix LED can replace the standard LED headlights with LED daytime lights. Typical Quattro in design, the blistered wheel-arches are wider and filled to the brim by standard 20-inch wheels.
At the rear end, the RS-specific diffuser insert, the oval tailpipes of the RS exhaust system and the RS roof edge spoiler make for a distinctive look whilst the rear lights come standard with LED technology. Buyers can opt for different exterior packages ranging from the High Gloss black front design package, Carbon Styling Package, Carbon mirror housings or Red brake callipers at an extra cost. A large Panoramic glass roof is a must option for serious buyers.
The interior retains the high quality well laid out cabin seen on standard A4 models but the RS4 gets electrically operated RS sport leather seats with a standard honeycomb pattern (Fine Nappa leather is optional). The flat bottomed leather steering wheel with multifunction controls, the shift gate and the illuminated door sills get RS emblems. The RS4 comes standard with virtual cockpit and MMI Navigation Plus but you will pay a bit extra for the head-up display. RS-specific displays indicate the g-forces, tire pressures and torque. LED ambient lighting, Bang & Olufsen multi-speaker sound comes standard.
The interior styling packages available to buyers include gloss black, carbon with aluminium attachments and carbon with black attachments around the cabin for that racy feel. Rear seat passengers enjoy sports seats as well with ample space for a family of 3 additional rear seat members. The dog and luggage are catered for in the 505-litre compartment but if you fold the rear seats, 1510-litres of space is available.
Powering the RS4 is Audis new 2.9 TFSI BiTurbo V6 as seen on the RS5 and Porsche models. It develops 331kW/600Nm going to all wheels (Quattro) via an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic. 0-100km/h is achieved in a claimed 4.1 seconds, top speed limited to 250km/h (280km/h with RS Dynamic package). Fuel efficiency claims are 8.8l/100km.
To ensure all that power is transferred dynamically to the road, Audi has installed a variable shock absorber suspension as standard with an optional rear sports differential and Sports Suspension Plus with Dynamic Ride Control DRC. Ceramic brakes and RS dynamic steering adding to the fun factor but need more cash to get on your RS4. Drivers can define their own individual personal driving experience using the standard dynamic handling system Audi drive select.
The Audi RS 4 Avant comes standard with the 5 year/100 000km Audi Freeway Plan and inclusive of all taxes:
- Audi RS 4 Avant 331kW Quattro Tiptronic: R 1,211,500
