With just months of having the X-Class range roaming the streets of Mzansi, Mercedes has decided to show us flames once again with the introduction of the new X-Class 350d V6 bakkie… uX-Ongasolveki!!
Power, Presence, Precision; these are some of the words used to define the new X350d bakkie which the maker claims is a game changer within the bakkie segment. Claims that the X Class has created a “Premium” segment in the Mzansi double cab market are used a lot by Mercedes people.
And why would that be true? Well for starters, the new X350d slots a 3.0-litre V6 Turbo diesel with 190kW/550Nm under its belt. This model is only available with a 7G Tronic Plus Auto transmission with steering shift paddles and Eco Start/Stop function. When put through its paces, the X 350 d completes the 0-100km/h leap in a claimed 7.9sec flat before setting off to a top speed of 205km/h. Fuel consumption figures are claimed at 9.0l/100km with CO2 emissions sitting at a taxable figure of 237g/km. The standard ECO start/stop function and the Dynamic Select switch with Comfort, Eco, Sport, Manual and Offroad modes is a major contributor to the claimed fuel figures. Pedal shifts are also offered as standard across the X350d range.
Still on the technical and mechanical side, the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system with optional Dynamic Select system keeps the premium bakkie planted in any driving condition. The unique suspension set-up that now slots two differential locking points (rear and centre lock) allows ruggedness and comfort on road dynamics whilst off road capability is on par with the double cab bakkies segment leaders, but these capabilities will go untested for most X350d owners due to the premium-status it bears.
Nothing has changed from the looks department besides the V6 Turbo badges on the sides of the front fenders. Even so, the X350d still manages to cause a stir everywhere you drive, be it in the country side, Townships and even on urban roads. The design is unmistakable Mercedes with the front getting the 3-pointed star, twin-louvre radiator grille, high bonnet and LED headlamps with LED daytime lights extending into the wheel arches. The lower part of the front gets fog lamps and aggressive air intakes. The rear gets a bumper that doubles up as a footstep whilst LED lights are placed on either side of the tailgate.
Equipment lines to be available on the range topping model will be PROGRESSIVE and POWER lines, whilst customers seeking further individualism have also been catered for by an extensive range of accessories by the maker. These include a new sports bar, which can be combined with a roll cover in black or silver, there is also a choice of styling bar, hard cover, hardtop, stowage box, load bed liner, load-securing rails in the load bed, and an underguard protector.
