The VW Polo Vivo range in Mzansi recently got a facelift with design, interior trim and feature upgrades. We tested the Vivo GT to find out if it’s worth the GT name.
The design got positive reactions from onlookers with most people seeing that it was different but not knowing where the changes were. When we pointed out these design changes at the front, the “Polo 7 look” was constantly mentioned especially when looking at the front bumper design. The optional LED are definitely worth the R11 580 as the LED daytime lights give the Polo Vivo a premium look. They enhance safety by illuminating the road at night. The polished black roof shows that VW monitors their customers as most buyers usually paint the roof black so now it comes standard on GT models.
The standard 17″ Mirabeau Alloy Wheels in Anthracite work very well with the lower ride height giving the Vivo GT some “GTI” vibes. The rear spoiler and side chrome exhaust complete the sporty design of the GT. Overall, the Vivo GT shows why Mzansi loves the Polo as its design flair is always appreciated in Mzansi hang out spots.
The front seats gained extra padding on the side for that sports feel whilst the two tone colour was well received by most that viewed the interior. Whats also noticeable was the quality fit and finish of the Polo Vivo with soft padding used in areas where the occupants will touch.
The new 9inch colour infotainment screen comes standard on GT models. It has smartphone technology with Android Auto/ Apple CarPlay which means you can mirror your smartphone features on to the screen. WhatsApp chat is also made easy as you can get the voice to read your messages and you can voice respond with the system sending these as text. Airconditioning comes standard with the front windows also being electric.
Auto headlights ensure user friendly operations when entering dark areas. The instrument cluster has been revised giving the Polo Vivo a fresh look. Operation of the infotainment can be done via steering wheel mounted buttons with cruise control operated via the turn stalk.
The jewel in the Vivo GT package is the 81kW 1.0 TSI 3-Cylinder engine credited with a healthy 200Nm. This mill drives the front wheels via a snappy 6 speed manual gearbox. The 3 cylinder thrum and the turbo push makes the GT a very enjoyable drive hatch. Its performance will also surprise many in robot to robot sprints whilst spririted driving will not hit you at the pumps with 4.8 liters per 100km easily attainable. The lower ride height makes handling to be sporty and quite entertaining.
There are a variety of colour options for the Polo Vivo GT with each colour giving the GT a personal touch feel. Add smash & grab and the Vivo definitely doesn’t feel like a budget hatch. Priced at R356 000, the Polo Vivo GT can be had for R5 299 per month instalments with VW Family Offers, why wait.
