Chery South Africa had been pushing a heavily encrypted campaign under the hashtag #WHATSYOURPOWERMOVE for months and has now finally unveiled their all-new hybrid vehicle lineup at Montecasino in Johannesburg, South Africa, claiming that the cars are poised to change the game as we know it.
Chery calls their new hybrid range the Chery Super Hybrid, featuring the familiar 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that now works seamlessly with two electric motors, enabling all-electric driving in the city and a hybrid or petrol-only experience on longer journeys.
This new setup also introduces a transmission with one- or three-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) said to have an efficiency rate of over 97.6%. The event showcased the entire range gaining new electric power, including the Tiggo Cross, the Tiggo 7, the original flagship Tiggo 8, and the debut of what is now set to be the brand’s flagship, the all-new Tiggo 9.
The Tiggo Cross CSH
is available in the same grades as the standard Tiggo Cross (Comfort and Elite). The car includes exterior features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, front ventilated discs, and rear disc brakes, along with a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup. It receives automatic LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, along with a sporty tailgate spoiler, chrome-plated dual exhaust finishers, and body-colored exterior finishes. The Elite variant features red-painted brake calipers and an electrically operated sunroof. The interior remains largely unchanged you get ambient lighting, keyless entry soft touch and leather materials in the cabin, wireless phone connectivity with badging and displays only being the tell tale signs of alterations.
The vehicle is equipped with the latest safety features, including Traction Control, Emergency Brake Assist, Hill Descent Control, Brake Assist, and dual front, front side, and side curtain airbags. The Elite variant adds a front inter-seat airbag to the safety suite. While the Comfort HEV receives a rear-view camera (with dynamic guidelines), the Elite includes the following driver assistance features: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic Brake System (AEB), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Door Opening Warning (DOW), Front Collision Warning (FCW), Intelligent High Beam Control (IHC), Lane Change Assistance (LCA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Traffic Congestion Assistance (TJA), and a 360 HD panoramic camera system.
Powering the Tiggo Cross HEV is a 1.5-litre engine that develops 71 kW and 118 N.m of torque. The addition of an electric motor and 1.83 kWh battery pack results in combined power outputs of 150 kW and 310 N.m of torque, sent to the front wheels via the marque’s Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), which transmits power to the road smoothly and efficiently. The vehicle has a fuel consumption of 5.4 L/100 km and a range of 1,000 km. The drive selector switches between four operating modes—Pure Electric, Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid, and Energy Recovery—optimizing efficiency for every driving scenario. During urban low-speed cruising, the system prioritizes pure electric mode to eliminate fuel consumption during vehicle acceleration from a standstill.
Pricing for the Tiggo Cross HEV starts at R439,900 for the Comfort and R469,900 for the Elite variant. The Tiggo 7 CSH
is offered in two well-equipped trims, coming standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, ventilated front disc brakes, and rear disc brakes. Automatic LED headlights, LED taillights, LED daytime running lights, and rear fog lamps are standard across both trims. Color options include Bloodstone Red & New Carbon Black (2-tone), NASDAQ Silver, Carbon Black, Khaki White, Khaki White & New Carbon Black (2-tone), Phantom Grey, New Tech Grey, and New Vanilla White. The Tiggo 7 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 265 kW and 310 N.m of torque.
This power is available across a broad band from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm. With an 18.3 kWh battery, the Tiggo 7 CSH is said to be capable of traveling up to 93 km on electric power alone, with a total combined range of up to 1,200 km—enough to travel from Cape Town to Bloemfontein on a single tank. Power is sent to the front wheels via Chery’s smooth and efficient Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), with combined fuel consumption rated at just 4.9 L/100 km. Charging is convenient, with a full recharge taking 45 minutes to 1 hour using a DC fast charger, or between 4 and 8 hours when plugged into an AC charger.
For safety protection. Both trims receive front dual, front side, side curtain, front inter-seat, and driver’s knee airbags. The Tiggo 7 CSH is backed by a comprehensive 5-year/150,000 km warranty, a 10-year/unlimited mileage battery warranty (applicable to the first owner only), and a 5-year/60,000 km service plan, ensuring long-term confidence and value.
The powertrain setup has an engine thermal efficiency of 44.5% meaning Chery hybrids waste less fuel and emit less CO2. The electric-only range for the engine would be of up to 90 km is ideal for daily urban commutes, with a combined driving range of up to 1200 km (depending on conditions and specific models). Fuel consumption is claimed at 1.55 L/100 km on a full charge. The standout Tiggo 9 PHEV boasts an even more impressive combined range of 140000 km from a full tank and a fully charged battery, while returning just 4.5 L/100 km. Specification on the Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 have yet to released by Chery but should be available soon.
