The Zwartkop Raceway has proven to be the ultimate choice for the Toyota GR team to unveil their newest Corolla GR which is aimed at the VW Golf 8R.

What truly sets this Corolla GR model apart from its competition is the incorporation of a manual transmission, delivering an engaging driving experience for enthusiasts. As a bonus, we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to mildly sample it on track!

We kicked off the day with an exhilarating session that provided us with a comprehensive overview of the model, setting the stage for an enjoyable series of laps around the Zwartkop track. Following the thrilling track experience, we were then treated to a drift course and a skidpan challenge to put our driving skills to the test. It was an absolute adrenaline rush from start to finish! This is the sort of rush that prospective owners will be enjoying everyday of the trouble free driving experience (this is a Toyota after all).

The GR Corolla is a thrilling hot-hatch that showcased competitive performance on the track. It's 3-cylinder 1.6-litre engine, producing an impressive 221kW, delivered an exhilarating surge of power, amplified by exceptional cornering grip.

The seamless shifting capabilities of the 6-speed short shifting manual transmission allowed for smooth and precise gear changes, while the 4-wheel drive system ensured adequate traction without interruptions from understeer, with oversteer being easily kept under control when needed.

The vehicle's impressive visual aesthetics make a lasting impact, thanks to its striking and fierce design that is strategically crafted to appeal to a sophisticated customer base. However, upon closer observation, we noticed a few minor drawbacks.

The unconventional design of the tailpipes might not resonate well with its intended audience. Additionally, the interior lacks sufficient rear legroom and has a somewhat simplistic styling that doesn't fully capture its high-performance essence.

Unfortunately, we didn't have the chance to test the normal driving behavior of the GR Corolla. However, one aspect that caught our attention was the firm suspension setup, which might present some challenges during everyday driving.

The GR Corolla faces a tough challenge as it goes head-to-head with highly acclaimed contenders in the hot-hatch category, especially the VW Golf R. It needs to prove itself as a worthy competitor. On the other hand, the GR Supra is sure to thrill and captivate car enthusiasts.
