Toyota has launched the new Starlet Cross adding another SUV to its already packed line up that includes the Corolla Cross, Urban Cruiser. Starlet Cross targets the trendy, style savvy buyer and its now available in Mzansi.

The 4 grades model line (XR, XS in manual and auto) up majors on value and an extensive feature list. On the design, the front gets the 3D trapezoidal front grille with chrome garnish. LED headlamps come standard with LED daytime lights placed higher on the front. The Toyota logo sits proud on top of the grille. A skid plate is placed lower in the bumper for that SUV design.

On the side, the Starlet Cross brings the "Coupe-SUV" style to the compact segment for a very appealing design. This means a slopping roof with the XR models getting a Bi-tone colour option (including on the mirrors) where the roof is in black contrasting with the Orange, Silver and Luxe Red. Both the XR and XS come with 16 inch alloys (machined XR & black -Xs). The mirrors have an auto fold function on the XR. The roof rails add a sporty design accent but are not for carrying capacity.

The side wheel arches are robust and add aggression to the design. Black side sills and chrome side sill garnish come standard on the XR with the Xs getting black side sill garnish.

The rear gets LED lights combination lamps with a strip linking both side lights. There is a roof spoiler and a skid plate placed on the rear bumper.

The interior is dominated by the infotainment touchscreen (9inch on XR & 7inch on Xs) which has Android Auto (cable link) and Apple CarPlay (wireless). The Starlet comes with a climate control, electric windows all round, cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, sliding armrest and rear air vents.

Stowage space is neatly placed around the cabin for practicality. Rear space can be enhanced with the folding rear seats which adds more luggage capacity.

Tech is a highlight with wireless charging for smartphones, front and rear charging pots (USB and C-type). 360 degree camera for parking aids functionality whilst the Heads up Display means the driver can view driving info without moving eyes from the windscreen.

Safety tech is handled by 6 airbags, hill-start assist and vehicle stability control. Power comes from a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine credited with 77kW/138Nm Torque. Claimed consumption figures are 5.6l/100km for the 5 speed manual and 5.8l/100km for the 4-speed auto. Drive is to the front wheels.
