Say hello to the first ever Volvo EX60 – once what was the only model in the range to still only come with an ICE setup is now a new, all-electric mid-size SUV that as Volvo claim "changes the game in the largest electric market segment in terms of range, charging speed, performance and price."
This is a complete new car from the ground up that is built on the SPA3, Volvo Cars’ new electric vehicle architecture, and powered by HuginCore, the Volvo Cars core system.
The EX60 adopts design cues as seen in recent Volvo SUVs like the EX30 and EX90. Starting at the front where the car gets a closed off grille flanked by Thor-Hammer styled headlights in a split-layout with new daytime running lights on the top and the main beams located on either side of the lower grille. The customary SUV skid plate is neatly placed on the lower part of the front fascia.
The side profile is more on the lower slung in stance as it consists of a sloping roofline and tapered body sides all boost overall aerodynamic efficiency. As a result, the EX60 is said to produce competitive drag coefficient of 0.26. In keeping with the slippery design, the EX60 has door handles integrated in the window pillar.
Some more standout features on the side are the 20 inch wheels that go up 22 inches.
At the rear the EX60 debuts vertical taillights like the ones you get on the smaller EX30 that are intergrated along the edge of the boot lid boasting new LED light signatures. There is also a rear wiper and some new Volvo EX60 badging presented in a very minimal and clutter less manner.
For those who enjoy the great outdoors, Volvo has given you the option of choosing a more rugged EX60 Cross Country which then earns the car a slightly raised ride height, cladding all around the vehicle (stainless steel skid plates), air suspension for traversing bumpy terrains, and some Cross Country exclusive 21-inch wheels to match the off-roader look.
The inside also gets a makeover over which sees it gain a new layout that features a new infotainment. The infotainment is now vertical, something which is a first for Volvo as their screens have been mounted horizontally. The new large infotainment touchscreen houses most of the important function as there is almost no physical button on the dashboard. The driver gets a new multifunctional steering wheel with a new slim drivers display behind it. With Volvo adopting an Eco friendly approach, the interior finish will definitely have recycled material.
On a tech front the new EX60 will feature Gemini, the new AI assistant from Google. Gemini is deeply integrated with your car and lets you have natural and personalised conversations without having to remember specific commands. This addition also ensures that Volvo's infotainment is upgrade in terms of performance as this has been a niggle of their in recent times.
To keep the tunes rolling in, all occupants will have their ears blessed by a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system with additional headrest speakers in all four main seats for the first time ever. The EX60 will be the first Volvo with Apple Music pre-installed with Dolby Atmos, delivering an immersive Spatial Audio experience.
So you would expect the Swede to step up their game in terms of technology and that they did because Volvo promises that the new EX60 can travel around 810 kilometres on a single charge in the all-wheel drive configuration. The EX60 can add up to 340km of range in just ten minutes when using a 400kW fast charger.
The EX60 is available with three different powertrain variants. A top of the range sits the P12 AWD Electric variant which is said to offer up to 810km, second up will be the P10 AWD Electric which clocks in at a range of up to 660km. Entry into the range will be a rear-wheel powered P6 Electric variant which is said to deliver up to 620km of range. All in all, the EX60 is available in seven attractive variants, covering all needs and lifestyles.
The base P6 model uses a single-motor setup producing 272kW and 479Nm of torque, enabling a 0–62 mph sprint in 5.7 seconds. The P10 AWD features a dual-motor setup with a combined 375kW and 710Nm, enabling a 0–62 mph sprint in 4.4 seconds. Step up to the "P12 AWD" which gets a larger 91.0-kWh battery that output 499kW and 790Nm, enabling 0–60 mph run to just 3.8 seconds.
The EX60 due to arrive in South Africa in Q3 2026.
