Audi has unveiled its baby model, the second generation A1, a hatchback that will aim to capture the eyes of the classy young buyer.

The new Audi A1 has a dynamic, masculine design unlike recent models from Ingolstadt as it features a design that will actually make people notice its new instead of a facelift or worse similar to its predecessor. Its taut lines run from the front where the longer A1 has Audis’ Singleframe grille, curvy side air intakes which dominate the front design. As a homage to the Sport quattro, the brand’s rally icon from 1984, the A1 has three flat slits below the edge of the bonnet whilst full LED headlights with dynamic daytime lights are optional.

The side gets a wide flat sloping C pillar, a roof contrasting line available in two dark colours. Wheel sizes range from 15 to 18 inches. The rear gets LED lights, rear spoiler and a curvy bumper design. The S line design kit adds aggression in the design and will definitely be the one to go for especially when viewed from the front where the front air intakes are enlarged. There is also a special Edition model based on the S Line and also gets bronze finishes (wheels) amongst other unique design accents.

The 5 door only Sportback A1 drops the 3 door from the line up with the 5 door gaining more space inside to seat 5 adults in comfort. Typical Audi, the interior is finished in high quality fit and finish in a practical layout. Digitizing of the interior continues even on lower models at Audi as all A1s come standard with an HD digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch display and a multi function steering wheel. Optional features include Audis Virtual Cockpit, animated navigation maps and driver assistance graphics. The MMI is fully connected and acts as a 10.1-inch multi functional touchscreen infotainment system. A Bang and Olufsen Premium Sound system is also offered as an option giving owners 11 speakers and 560 watts.

Engines are only in TSI with power ranging from 70kW in the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder unit right to the 147kW 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine. Drive is to the front wheels via either a manual transmission or a 7-speed S tronic dual clutch system. The current top of the range model gets a 6 speed S tronic transmission instead. The suspension has been designed with dynamics and fun factor in mind giving owners the ability to enjoy the lightweight model.

The new Audi A1 is a definite for Mzansi with 2019 its likely introduction. Model lines and specification including prices will be made available closer to launch.
