After plenty of leaks before the time of the official launch, BMW has revealed the all-new, all-electric 3 Series i3, and it is just the second vehicle under the German stable to wear the Neue Klasse design language.

The 3 Series has always been the staple for the sedan segment when rivaling the likes of the C-Class from Merc and the now rebadged A5, which was previously the A4. This new all-electric vehicle promises to be an electric car, but in the typical BMW manner, which means it won't lose sheer driving pleasure.

Built on the CLAR platform, it is important to note that this all-electric version of the 3 Series is claimed to be different from the versions that will be ICE-powered. Back to the matter at hand. From launch, we understand that the first to pick in its range is the i3 M50 xDrive. This setup means that the vehicle puts power to all four wheels via a motor placed on each wheel. Together, these motors combine to produce an output of 345 kW and 645 Nm.

The M50 is claimed to have a range of up to 900 km from a full charge. In fact, the car is said to be capable of a charge rate of up to 400 kW, which allows for up to 400 km of range to be added in just 10 minutes of fast charging. Still on the topic of charging, the vehicle supports DC fast charging and normal 11 kW AC charging.

The Neue Klasse design language on the exterior of the vehicle is clear and dominant, as can be seen from the sporty silhouette proportions infused in the new 2.5-box design. Some additional aesthetic changes or additions are evident in the growth of the vehicle's length, short overhangs, and new body lines and creases, all of which are elements that lead one to immediately recognize this as a BMW 3 Series.

The sides gain new wheels with a semi-closed appearance , and one thing Beamer is that they will make a very good-looking wheel, and so it is the case here. You will also find that the vehicle has grown by 2,897 mm in wheelbase while gaining flared wheel arches and flat pop- out door handles - can't forget the legendary Hofmeister kink.

The front wears the four-eyed face that consists of the signature BMW kidney radiator grille, and twin headlights merge into a light signature, all encased in a glass housing. At the rear, there are new slim horizontal rear lights that almost look like those from the 7 Series, which is also due for a radical update .

Step into the interior, a place that is said to now feature a higher level of spaciousness, technology , and of course, comfort in materials. Here you will find the new BMW Panoramic iDrive setup, which consists of one large 17.9-inch infotainment screen and a Panoramic Vision display, projecting key information further into the driver's line of sight for easier, safer viewing. The driver gets a new two-spoke steering wheel in a rather unorthodox setup, leaving a kind of floating effect to the whole look.

Onboard, the iDrive setup will have an integrated AI assistant, thanks to four high-performance computers delivering up to 20 times more processing power than previous systems. These will enable functions like the BMW Operating System X and Digital Key functionality to be possible.

For driving dynamics, BMW ensures that "Sportiness and driving pleasure are invariably embedded in the DNA of the BMW 3 Series." The Heart of Joy high-performance system, together with three other superbrain high-performance computers, are systems that the brand says will allow for faster reaction times when pushing the vehicle to its limits. The car also uses a four-zone electrical architecture, which simplifies wiring, reduces weight, and improves overall efficiency-small changes that add up to meaningful gains in range and performance.

Production of the i3 starts in August 2026, and we can expect it to debut in Mzansi during the first or second quarter of 2027.
