Ford Motor Company SA has officially issued a Safety Recall relating to all Ford Transit Custom models built between 2024 and 2025.FMCSA has identified that in the affected vehicles, the passenger airbag needs to be replaced as a filter within the inflator might not meet the thickness specification.
They claim that this does not tamper with any vehicle operation under normal driving conditions ; however , in the event of an accident that meets the parameters for airbag deployment, the out-of-specification filters may restrict gas flow from the inflator.
There are five (5) vehicles affected in South Africa.
FMCSA will be contacting affected customers and advising them to contact their preferred dealer to schedule an appointment. Once booked in for an appointment, the dealer must inspect the vehicle and carry out the necessary repairs. This service will be performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the customer.
Ford Mustang: Low Pressure Fuel Pump Failure
FMCSA also commenced a Safety Recall relating to certain Ford Mustang models built between 2021 and 2022 as they have identified that the affected vehicles may lose fuel pressure and flow from the fuel tank due to failure of the low-pressure fuel pump.
In the words of Ford , "Loss of fuel pressure and flow from the low-pressure fuel pump can be a result of internal contamination of the jet pump, specifically in low fuel conditions and reduced fuel pump internal clearances, which result in an increase of internal friction and sensitivity to vapour lock."
In English, the fuel pump in charge of distributing fuel into the engine is having a hard time doing so because of potential fuel contamination , which hinders the pump's ability to work in its various terrains/modes. This may cause a lack of fuel delivery to the engine and result in an engine stall. An engine stall while driving increases the risk of an accident.
There are 333 vehicles affected in Southern Africa (South Africa - 330; Botswana - 1; Namibia - 2).
What we understand following the announcement is that FMCSA is working to provide parts in order to repair the concern when the parts become available, FMCSA or a Ford authorized dealer will notify the customer to schedule a service appointment for repairs to be completed free of charge.
