The fact that premium SUVs from Chinese brands are now taken seriously by buyers shows how far the Chinese have come. We attended the local launch of the GAC Emkoo and came away pleasantly surprised.
Available in two models, the Executive and the Executive-Plus, the EMKOO has edgy design lines that will definitely date well whilst standing out on the road. The front has 12 bars arranged in a “V” shape and decorated with titanium-tungsten alloy strips.
The matrix LED headlights comes standard and they deliver a combined total of 2 650 lumens for both low and high beams – 25% more than earlier lens units. LED Daytime Lights are neatly integrated into the headlight units.
The Executive comes with 18-inch alloys whilst the Executive Plus gets 19-inch alloy wheels. Dynamic lines feature on the side panels of the Emkoo with similar lines along the A pillar. Both spec models come with a full length panoramic glass top. There is a MECHA-STYLE spoiler at the rear whilst the rear gets “lightsaber-inspired” LED taillights, arranged vertically in an “X” pattern, feature 128 embedded LED bulbs, and include a music sync function, adding a dynamic touch.
The EMKOO’s cabin features a vibrant and interactive display system composed of three screens: a 10.1” touch screen, up to a 10” LCD instrument cluster display, and a Head-Up Display (HUD) on the Executive-Plus. The gear shift adds a sleek and innovative touch to the interior.
The front leather seats are electrically adjusted and also feature heating and cooling options.

The EMKOO’s 1 901mm wide spacious cabin with a 2 750mm wheelbase, offers generous legroom – 1 059mm in the front seats and 990mm in the rear – ensuring ample space for passengers to stretch out comfortably. The rear seat passage is flat, and the adjustable rear seats, which fold down, allow a maximum boot capacity of 638 litres.
The EMKOO features a 130kW/270Nm 1.5 TGDI MegaWave engine paired with a 7WDCT transmission driving the front wheels. GAC claims 6.4L/100km (NEDC) fuel efficiency. Drive modes have Comfort, Eco and Sport. A McPherson Independent Suspension in front and a Multi-Link Independent Suspension at the rear, reduces impact and residual vibrations, contributing to a smoother ride and better control.
The EMKOO advanced safety technologies and comprehensive protection features include:
