The GR Cup race weekend at Zwartkops Raceway was filled with action and excitement. The event, featuring the Toyota GR86 race cars driven by motoring writers, proved to be captivating with thrilling battles on the track. Despite the cold weather, the six writers showcased their skills and pushed the limits of the race cars.
Setshaba Mashigo stood out as the star of the weekend, displaying remarkable performance and determination. He secured the fastest time, beating Chad Luckhoff to claim pole position. Brendon Staniforth also impressed with the third-fastest qualifying time.
In Race 1, Mashigo capitalised on his starting position and secured a well-deserved victory. Denis Droppa fought his way through the field to finish second, while Luckhoff took third place. Reuben van Niekerk edged out Thomson, and Jones and Staniforth engaged in a fierce battle throughout the race.
Race 2 saw Mashigo once again emerge victorious, displaying consistency and skill. Luckhoff, who started from pole position, finished in second place, with Jones completing the podium. Van Niekerk, Staniforth, and Thomson followed as the final finishers.
Unfortunately, Droppa's race came to an early end after an incident with Luckhoff on the last lap. However, the drivers handled the situation amicably, demonstrating the competitive spirit and mutual respect that characterizes the GR Cup.
The next event in the 2023 GR Cup driven by Netstar will be held at the Aldo Scribante Race Track in Gqeberha on June 17th. It promises to be another thrilling showcase of skill, speed, and intense competition among the country's top motoring writers.
