GWM at the Shanghai Auto Show – Part 1

GWM Hybrids and EVs excel as expected but the Chinese maker bucks the trend and also introduces cars for the petrol heads and adventure seekers.

GWM has made sure its slogan “Go With More” resonates thoughtout the world with a flurry of new models and spec additions to current models that will ensure retains its climb in out local market.

The Mzansi media team giving GWMs “Go With More” Global strategy a thumbs up

GWM President Mu Feng delivered a keynote address themed “From the Great Wall to Global GWM” ,during which he announced the company’s new global strategy and unveiled a new brand logo. The next products formed part of the GWM event:

GWM 4.0 Turbo V8 and V6 Hi4 T Hybrid engines

First V8 Turbo engine from GWM

GWM Mzansi recently unveiled the 135kW and 480Nm 2.4 Turbodiesel motor claimed to consume as little as 8.6l/100km, in the P500, P300 and Tank 300. At the 2025 Shanghai Motorshow the Chinese maker sprung a surprise that will excite petrolheads across the globe. The 4.0 Twin Turbo V8 engine will be installed in the Tank 700 and Tank 500 linked to an automatic transmission (likely a 9 speed auto transmission). The V8 engine has been designed to offer a smooth experience for occupants devoid of vibrations but retaining the powerful sound of a V8 engine.

No power figures were quoted for the V8 but judging by GWM’s 3.0 V6 Turbo engine, itself credited at 260kW/500Nm, the V8 engine should have up to +400kW/900Nm of Torque available. There was no mention of a Hybrid set up for this engine hence the suspected figures but should this engine get Hybrid assistance, that figure would jump up. Mzansi is unlikely to get this engine but GWM Mzansi did assure us that the Tank 500 will be getting a V6 Turbodiesel mill soon to cater for those that feel the Hybrid petrol engine currently on offer doesn’t do enough.

3.0T Hi4-T All Wheel Drive Architecture

On the GWM stand, there was also a 3.0 Turbo V6 Hybrid motor that was showed which GWM self-developed. The V6 turbocharged engine with a P2 electric motor and a dedicated 9-speed hybrid transmission, has a combined output of 385 kW and 800 N•m of torque, 90 km of electric range (WLTC), and 0–100 km/h acceleration in just 5.6 seconds (Tank 700).

GWM Tank 300 Hi4 T Hybrid

GWM also showed a “Hulked” version of the Tank 300 called the Hi4-T boasting large and serious off road tyres, a steel bull bar, roof rack with side steps. This model is probably a result of learnings from the Arctic Trucks conversions done to Tank 300 by the Iceland converter.

Under the bonnet is GWM’s cutting-edge Hi4-T hybrid system credited with 300 kW and 750 N•m of torque and up to 860 km range. Fast charging from 30% to 80% takes just 24 minutes. With a 6 kW external discharge capability, it powers electric stoves, ovens, projectors, and more for outdoor adventures. Inside, its 2.2 kW power output supports device chargingeven while driving or slow charging. What sets Hi4-T apart is its retention of a mechanical four-wheel-drive system with torque amplification. The intelligent 4WD system (TOD + MLOCK) comes with triple differential locks.

GWM also showed the special edition Tank Hooke which aims to travel further off road than the standard model. It features the same Hi4-T Hybrid engine but the suspension has been changed. The Hooke features a live front and rear axles. This model gets front and rear differential plus disconnect struts which aid off road capability.
