We joined Tata for a late-night gala to introduce the brand's newest compact SUV, the Tata Osprey. The evening also brought two surprises, with the brand confirming two additional models that are well on their way to a local introduction as part of its Phase 2 rollout strategy.

The Tata Osprey has officially landed.

The Tata Osprey is a sub compact SUV that looks to challenge the likes of the Renault Kiger and cars like the Chery Tiggo Cross by bringing forward more features, practicality and competitive pricing. The Osprey is quite the important vehicle for Tata and the country of India and they look to replicate and multiply that effect on our local soil.

This model wears the Nexon badge in its mother country and has become one of the best-selling vehicles, having sold around 2 million models since inception back in 2017. The vehicle stood out for an assortment of reasons, but one in particular has to be safety. The Nexon was the first India-built vehicle to gain a 5-star Global NCAP rating, which began the trend or motive for the brand to not only chase sales and good-looking vehicles but also to maximize ensuring that every vehicle that rolls off and out of the plant is safe for all.

Building on positive momentum

Tata follows a simple motive which is themed "nothing is impossible", which is quite fitting motto as the brand has just made a surprise appearance on the Top 15 best selling manufacturers in the month of August 2026. The stable was also excited to share that since market introduction they have enjoy registering sales of up to +8500 units, and a large part of this is thanks to an expansive dealer network that they have been able to set up.

The launch also introduced us to the facelift Tata Punch as well as a new model that will soon join the brands lineup called the Styzor which is known as the Sierra in India.

Any brand is as good as its representatives and that is why for Tata, after sales is a crucial component for their current success. TataMove is a promise that is designed to give Tata owners absolute peace of mind throughout their ownership journey. TataMove combines warranties, nationwide service coverage, roadside assistance, mobility solutions and OEM-certified repairs into a simple promise that Tata will always keep motorists moving.

What powers the Tata Osprey in Mzansi

The vehicle is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 88kW and 170Nm, this unit is paired to to a five-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Quite an interesting offering given that this car will be one of the few in its segment to offer a turbocharged engine option throughout its lineup and we know people of Mzansi love power.

A first look at the Osprey

The vehicle has all the makings of a compact SUV in terms of appearance, here you can expect cladding, a tall or rather raised ride height accompanied by boxy proportions.

For dimensions, the Osprey measures 3,995 mm in length. The vehicle offers a 382-litre boot, while 208 mm of ground clearance is available for some very very light over landing.

The vehicle looks like a hatch back body style version of the Tata Curvv from the front as it gains the sleek fascia that fits in the brands identity. The rear features a light bar taillight cluster which is further dominated by bold "Osprey" branding on the big boot lid. The side profile is unmistakably a compact SUV as the car features a two tone color way on higher trims, Tata fans will have only one wheel size to choose from in the form of a 16 inch wheel design.

The cabin offers space and a sunroof

Safety is one of the Osprey's biggest selling points, with six airbags fitted as standard across the range. Tata claims that there is big focus on family practicality and safety as can be seen with the presence of ISOFIX child-seat anchors with a top tether, seatbelt reminders for all occupants and rear parking sensors as standard.

Inside, the cabin receives a digital infotainment display and digital driver's instrument cluster, while the seats are finished in black cloth upholstery. The cabin is practical, although one noticeable omission is the lack of cup holders. It may sound like a small thing, but for motorists who enjoy having a cold drink in summer or something warm during winter, it's an important detail.

“For us, safety starts with what surrounds you. Osprey combines a strong, fortified cabin with the active and passive safety systems designed to help protect the people inside it. Importantly, the core safety package is standard across the range, so customers do not have to move up through the grades to access these fundamental safety features,” says Allison.

The vehicle launches with four derivatives to pick from

The Tata Osprey launches with four derivatives, with equipment increasing as buyers move up the range. Starting at the base you have the Osprey Smart+ MT which equips the vehicle with the basic needs such as six-airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD, a seven-inch touchscreen, and rear parking sensors.

The Smart+ DCA builds on that slight by offering up the automatic seven speed DCT that involves manual operations thanks to the presence of paddle shifters.

Stepping up and outwards to the Flagship and its secondary offering, you are opened up to much more like full LED headlamps, automatic climate control, an electric panoramic sunroof and Keyless entry and push-button start along with front parking sensors just to name a few key attributes.

Model range and pricing

For the brand, the introduction of the Osprey is a bigger sign of things to come and stands at the forefront of a vital brand reinvention that will see the Tata passenger car division rebrand into Tata.cars.
