Nissan’s luxury division Infiniti has confirmed its plans to electrify its entire portfolio from 2021 onwards. The media will catch a first glimpse of this new strategy at the Paris Motor Show when Infiniti showcases its Project Black S prototype high performance sedan.

The prototype is based on the Q60 RED SPORT 400 sports coupe and has been developed in conjunction with the Renault Sport Formula One team. The Project Black S prototype high performance sedan is a fully-fledged high-performance sedan. This has been achieved through the fusion of an organic, artistic design of the Q60 sports coupe with greater aerodynamic efficiency and high levels of downforce with a functional motorsport-inspired performance aesthetic.

The main attraction to the Project Black S prototype is the combination of high-performance dual-hybrid technology with the maker’s VR30 3.0liter V6 twin-turbo engine that now delivering an access of 420kW compared to the standard 298kW unit. The power hike is an energy recovery system (ERS) that allows for additional power and torque.  No accurate figure has been confirmed on the 0-100km sprint, with the maker confirming an under 4sec sprint figure. More to this is the fact that the prototype’s powertrain employs 3 motor generator units (MGU). A single MGU-K (‘K’ stands for ‘kinetic’) unit harvests kinetic energy from braking. Uniquely, the engine’s twin electric turbochargers are fitted with two MGU-H (‘H’ for ‘heat’) units, to harvest heat energy from exhaust gases. This enables the powertrain to generate electrical power under both braking and acceleration. This model is a clear synergy between F1 technology and on the road motoring.

INFINITI’s Project Black S prototype will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October 2018, with full details available during the show. Stay tuned.
