The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan has finally reached Mzansi soil, packing a more spacious cabin and a sexier look.

The new A-Class comes in with more room that its hatch sibling, thanks to its revised dimensions that allow for an above-average shoulder, elbow and headroom plus the easy access to the rear. The larger boot (420litres) complimented by the larger boot opening also allows for added convenience and comfort for loading and off-loading larger luggage items.

Design-wise, Mercedes-Benz has focused largely on the aerodynamics of the A-Class sedan for better fuel consumption especially in light of the high fuel prices in Mzansi. Achieving such aerodynamics and efficiency meant that the compact sedan had to undergo numerous optimisation programmes, resulting in an efficient yet sexy exterior design language.

This includes reduced body-lines, precise gaps and short front and rear overhangs. The front end gains a low, elongated bonnet, slimline headlamps with chrome element, torch-like daytime driving lights – plus the single-louvre diamond radiator grille with chrome pins (optional), and the central star. The back is smothered with two-part tail lamps and a two-part rear bumper that is available with either a black diffuser of with chrome trim strip and chrome tailpipe tips, depending on selected line. Also available are a set of new 16inch to 19inch that fit seamlessly under the pronounced wheel arches for a more sportier stance.

The interior design gains an avant-garde wing-shaped dashboard design, a free-standing wide-screen display available in three versions (two 7inch displays, one 7inch and one 10.25inch, two 10.25inch displays).  Sporty turbine air vents, ambient lighting with 64 colours to choose from complete the package.

Two variants have been made available in Mzansi – kick-starting the line-up is the A200 that benefits from a 120kW/250Nm 1.3litre 4-potter petrol engine that returns a claimed 5.2l/100km with CO2 emissions sitting at 119g/km. The range topping A250 Sport delivers 165kW/260Nm from a 2.0litre 4-cylinder engine. Both models send drive through the front wheels via a standard 7G-DCT auto transmission.

Available standard and optional safety and convenience features include Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Emergency Stop Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and the PRE-SAFE® PLUS feature.
