Mercedes-Benz has lifted the veil of its new A-class range, said to be “youthful and dynamic as ever, but grown-up and comfortable like never before”.

Exterior design queues closely mimic those of the new CLS model, which include a newly designed front end with a low bonnet, flat LED headlamps with chrome elements and torch-like daytime driving lamps, whilst the redesigned radiator grille adds a potent dose of elegance and style to the mix. Wider wheel arches, redesigned rear bumper with slim, two-section taillights ensure a classier appearance.

The interior has been completely redesigned, now spotting a freestanding widescreen display housing the makers new “MBUX” multimedia system, whilst the sporty turbine air vents add to some of the new features available.

The new A-Class will be available with a range of new 4-cylinder engines;  a 1.5litre diesel unit available on the 85kW/260Nm A180d model and a 1.4litre petrol unit powering the 120kW/250Nm A200 model. The current range-topping 165kW/350Nm 2.0litre petrol unit drives the A250 model. The AMG version of the A Class is expected later this year in A45 AMG spec and it has to produce more than 300kW to dethrone the RS3 Sportback which has 298kW. All models will be available with a new 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission (optional on the entry-level A200 model). On request the new A-Class is available with the permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC with fully variable torque distribution.

Expect more engines to be available later in the year. Mzansi availability date is yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned.
