Mitsubishi have silently updated the Triton's lineup with the addition of a new Bi-Turbo diesel engine which will be exclusively available on the GLS derivatives.

“The updates to the 2026 Triton range will ensure that this model continues to perfectly caters for the needs of South African bakkie customers while remaining competitive in a rapidly evolving bakkie market,” says Lerato Nonyane, General Manager: Product & Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).

A substantial performance increase

The Triton Bi-Turbo has a significant power upgrade thanks to some fine tuning of the 2.4-litre 4N16 DI-DC engine and the additional geometry turbo. This has resulted in outputs of 150kW and 470Nm compared to the standard 135kW and 430Nm that is produced by the 2.4L Single-Turbo Diesel. The new engine is mated to the six-speed automatic transmission, and this model will be available exclusively as a 4x4 derivative.

The Triton doesn't lose out on safety equipment either

As standard the Triton Bi-Turbo GLS models come with the Mitsubishi Motors Safety sensing suite which brings with it a long list of driver assistance features and elevates the safety to a completely new level. These systems include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with steering switch, Automatic High beam (AHB), Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM) with pedestrian detection, Lane Change Assist (LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Parking Sensor (Front & rear). The Triton Bi-Turbo also benefits from the fitment of a Multi Around Monitor.

The GLS model trims also receive some aesthetic revisions

These revisions are centred around the removal of all chrome elements in lieu of blacked out accents. The fog lamp bezels, door handles and side step as well as the rear gate handle and garnish are now finished in material black. The front bumper garnish, rear bumper, door mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels now feature a metallic black look. The inner housing of the rear combination lamp has also been blacked out in order to fit with the overall theme. In combination these updates drastically accentuated the Triton’s beast mode styling.

“The Triton Bi-Turbo and updated GLS represents the next step in the brands commitment to delivering vehicles that have been engineered to suit both business and lifestyle applications and which cater to customers that require versatility, capability and everyday comfort,” concludes Nonyane.

The Triton GLS is priced from R759 990 and this gets you a 5 Year / 90 000km Service Plan. Whilst we are yet to receive communication on this Bi-Turbo variant, we understand full specifications and additional details will be shared in the coming weeks.
