The BMW design team has certainly made sure their new 4 Series Coupe model will be the talk of the motoring world and that play right into the hands of their stylish and dynamic buyers. You will not mistake it for anything else on the road and in todays digital and lifestyle conscious age, I have a feeling its a winner.

The first thing you will immediately notice about the svelte 4-Series Coupe is the large “Beaver” grille which dominates the whole car. Either side of the grille are standard LED headlights with slim contours with adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight available as an option. Below the headlights are side air intakes which are more prominent should one go for the M-Sport design package. The standard model get chrome surrounds on the grille whilst the M-Sport models get a matt grey finish.

On to the side, the 4-Series Coupe gets standard 17-inch alloys with M-Sport/M-Performance models getting 18-inch alloys as standard. The M Sport package Pro includes M light-alloy wheels in 19-inch format with other 18-, 19- and 20-inch light-alloy wheel available on the options list. The side also shows the characteristic Coupe slopping roof with promised longer doors to aid access to the rear seats.

Stylishly darkened LED rear lights with eye-catching L-shaped light bars comes standard on all models. The rear is reminiscent of the larger 8 Series is design. Both the standard and M models get side air curtains with the M models getting a more aggressive design. All models now feature twin tailpipes (each either side) with the M Performance models getting trapezoidal design exhaust tips whilst the standard model gets round ones. M Sport models also get a faux diffuser. M Performance design accessories are available for buyers that seek that bit more exclusivity.

The interior adopts the design as seen on the latest 3-Series model meaning a driver focused cockpit design, new display grouping with up to 10.25-inch Control Display and optional, fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster. Control panel with high-quality design on the centre console, new sports leather steering wheel and newly developed sports seats as standard, knee pads on the centre console optional. Two seats in the rear with defined individual-seat character.

New generation of BMW Head-Up Display offers 70 per cent larger projection surface. 3D visualisation in the digital instrument cluster shows the driver the vehicle and its surroundings, as well as the activated assistance systems and the functions they can offer. Interior space is claimed to be bigger for both front and rear seat occupants with the strict 4 seater gaining improved quality tactile feel throughout the cabin. BMWs Intelligent Personal Assistant, iDrive Controller, steering wheel buttons, gesture control, cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless connectivity via WiFi are all digital age features BMW 4 Series expect and BMW has not disappointed.

Powering the local line up will be Turbo engines starting with the 420i which uses a 135kW/300Nm 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine (0-100km/h in 7.5 sec topping at 240km/h. 5.8L/100km claims). The 430i uses a tuned version of the same engine now giving 190kW/400Nm for claimed figures of 0-100km/h in 5.8 sec topping at 250km/h and 6.1L/100km fuel efficiency. Both these models drive the rear wheels. The current range topper (till Big-daddy M4 Competition arrives) is the M440i xDrive with a 275kW/500Nm 3.0-litre straight six credited with a 4.5 seconds 0-100km/h limited to 250km/h and consuming 7.1L/100km. As it has an xDrive suffix, this means drive is to all wheels. The M440i also gets mild Hybrid with a 48V starter- generator and second battery greatly increasing the scope for utilising Brake Energy Regeneration and the electrical power it produces. During acceleration, the generator gives an 8kW electric boost effect. All models come with BMWs 8-speed Steptronic Auto transmission. Drive modes come standard with Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ whilst the M440i also gets sports tuned M Adaptive damping. 50:50 weight distribution means the dynamic character of the 4-Series puts driver entertainment first.

The New BMW 4-Series will be available in Mzansi between October and December 2020 just in time for Dezember.
