Hyundai has launched the new i20 hatchback in Mzansi as it targets to enhance its footprint in Mzansi car sales with its most popular model.
The new i20 gains Hyundai’s new design language called “Sensuous Sportiness” which sees dynamic edgy lines around the new hatchback bringing it in line with recent new models from the Korean manufacturer. The front gets the new design grille which now extends to the lower section of the new bumper. The lights now have an angular design with the front fog lights mounted either side on the side air intakes which also house the LED daytime lights. The lower part of the bumper features polished black accents for a sporty look.
On to the side, Fluid models get 16-inch alloys whilst the Motion models get 15-inch steel wheels with covers. Fluid models can also be specced with a two tone finish where the roof is gloss black on a white or red metallic body paint. The folding mirror housings are also in polished black whilst the side gets edgy lines running from the front wheel arch to the rear. Rear lights wrap around from the side in a look similar to the Santa-Fe. A red glass finish links both rear lights whilst the shark fin antenna now comes standard on all models. The roof spoiler and lower parts of the bumper are also finished in black.
Inside, Hyundai promises more space for all occupants especially rear legroom for added passenger comfort. The modern interior layout is dominated by the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard. The instrument cluster is now digital with on board computer placed in between the rev and speed dials. The steering wheel is multi function with cruise control switches. Air condition is standard across the range with Fluid models getting rear air vents. Mode lighting is also standard on the Fluid spec. Wireless charging is a welcome feature on Fluid models with charging ports in front and at the back. Rear parking assistance comes standard with reversing camera standard across the range.
Cloth and leather finish depend on spec models.
Powering the local models are 3 engines driving the front wheels via either a 5 speed manual, 6 speed auto, 6 speed manual or 7-speed DCT Auto. The entry level 61kW/115Nm 1.2 4-cylinder engine is linked to only a 5 speed manual. The 1.4 litre 4-cylinder engine has 74kW/133Nm linked to a 6 speed auto transmission. The top of the range 1.0-litre 3-cylinder Turbo engine has 90kW/172Nm driving either a 6 speed manual or 7-speed DCT Auto. Safety is handled by 6 airbags on the Fluid (Motion has 2 front airbags) whilst all models get Isofix, ABS with EBD and a high mounted 3rd brake light. The range comes standard with a 7-year/200 000 km manufacturer’s warranty, a 4-year / 60 000 km service plan and 7-year / 150 000 km roadside assistance.
