The Nissan Navara in the SE Auto 4×2 spec is likely the volume seller for the Japanese auto maker and with Mzansi proving to be such a “bakkie” market, we tested it to find out how it stacks up to some serious competition.
In SE trim the Navara gets 16 inch wheels instead of the LE’s stylish 18inch units but retains the LED daytime lights coupled to the fantastic full LED headlights. The imposing chrome grille is still retained with fog lamps placed lower in the bumper. Side steps come standard but the SE spec loses the functional and stylish roof rails which are available as an option should the buyer want. At the back there is still the chrome rear bumper that also acts as a step whilst the rear spoiler still looks the part. The rear load bay came with a leather tonneau cover that helps keep times hidden from prying eyes (nama para) whilst the rear lid is lockable via key. Overall the Navara looks smart but does come up short against the Hilux (recently updated), Ranger and Amarok but it wipes the floor when compared to the Isuzu (KB/D-Max) and Mitsubishi (Triton). One did experience less public enthusiasm on this model when compared to the LE we tested earlier in the year.

The interior is well laid out with all controls falling within easy reach of the driver. One thing the Navara aces is space for 5 adults. The iMoto Team went on a road trip and the Navara proved SUV like in terms of on the road comfort made even better by the soft, comfortable cloth seats. We wouldn’t advise on these though if you have kids as the optional leather will prove more easy to maintain. Manual air condition, all-electric windows, cruise control, multi function steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless start, rear air vents are amongst a list of standard features. The one serous issue we had with the Navara (similar to the LE) is the touchscreen infotainment system. Its dated and doesn’t work properly in some cases proving quite frustrating when on the move. Stowage spaces are nicely placed around the cabin.

Our test unit was the 2.3D which means it has a 140kW/450Nm 2.3-litre 4-cylinder Bi-Turbo diesel engine which although lacking in refinement (notably noise) pulls clear of rivals in our books. Our test unit came with the 7 speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels (4×2) which shifts gears well but the lack of a locking rear differential is an interesting omission by Nissan. This unit pulls strongly and one Dakar (2.8 GD6) owner found out the hard way how this Nissan can tackle inclines at speed. Gearbox kick down can sometimes be slow when pushing hard but the engine Torque curve makes overtaking a breeze in almost any gear. The Navara also shines when it comes to on the road ride comfort due to its trick SUV like rear suspension and just like the LE version, this unit is very comfortable to drive. It handles corners very good when pushed (thats a + for a bakkie) but its no sports car and I am sure no one buys a bakkie expecting 370Z dynamics.

We averaged 9l/100km though our week long test, a very good “real-world” figure. At R486 900, the SE Auto 4×2 compares with the R553 600 Hilux Raider 2.8 GD6 Auto (since there is no SRX 2.8 model), R544 800 Ranger XLT Auto (also no XLS 3.2 engine). This makes the Navara a better bang for the buck when looked at in terms of powertrain which offers more power than lesser engined, similar spec rivals but undercuts similar level engine rivals with more spec. Navara comes with a standard 6 year/150 000km warranty and a 3 year/90 000km service plan (15 000 km service intervals).
