Renault has given its Duster a significant update, but during a recent media drive through the Western Cape, the overriding impression was that the brand has resisted the temptation to overcomplicate one of its most recognisable SUVs.

The drive from Cape Town through the mountainous Highlands and towards Hermanus provided a mix of tar, gravel and uneven terrain — conditions that suited the Duster’s long-standing character.

While the new-generation model introduces a more modern design, additional technology and an expanded list of safety features, it still feels like a relatively straightforward SUV. Renault has retained a 4x2 offering rather than chasing a more hardcore off-road identity, seemingly recognising that most Duster buyers are looking for a practical daily vehicle that can also handle the occasional adventure.

On the road, the Duster felt solid and composed, with noticeably less rattling than one might expect from a vehicle spending time on gravel and rocky surfaces. Its 212mm ground clearance also came in handy on the rougher sections of the route, although this is not a vehicle positioned as a serious off-road contender.

Inside, the changes are more noticeable. The cabin has moved towards a more contemporary, driver-focused design, with a 10.1-inch infotainment screen and wireless smartphone connectivity. Higher-spec derivatives introduce features such as a digital instrument cluster, wireless charging and, depending on the model, ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof.

Practicality remains a key part of the package, with up to 518 litres of boot space and considerably more room when the rear seats are folded.
The range offers a choice between a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine and a more powerful 1.3-litre turbo, with manual and automatic options available.

With prices ranging from R339,999 to R499,999, the new Duster enters a competitive SUV market. Its appeal may lie less in flashy technology or dramatic styling and more in its ability to offer a sensible balance between everyday comfort, practicality and the freedom to leave the tar road behind when the weekend calls.
