The sub compact SUV segment has seen great growth with buyers seeking a versatile, high riding, efficient SUV packed with tech and comfort features. Tata feels their Punch will meet all those expectations, we attended its launch.

With a starting price of of R244 900 for what Tata claims represents exceptional value for money in the segment, the Punch offers a grille featuring Tata’s signature humanity line, which incorporates a dash of chrome as an extension of the car’s bold and minimal philosophy. This is flanked by projector headlamps and LED DRLs. The headlights are automatically activated when in the dark with rain sensing wipers adding to the versatility. Front fog lamps are neatly placed on the lower part of the front bumper. Protective cladding on the doors, wheel arches and lower sills add to the SUV theme.

16inch diamond cut alloy wheels are on the top spec Creative+ with a two tone paintwork where the roof is painted gloss black with a shark fin antenna. Roof rails, auto folding mirros also aid versatility on the top spec whilst the hidden rear door opening handle (below) hints at a coupe like look. LED rear lights, rear wiper and demister form part of the spec offered on varying models in the range.

The interior is dominated by the large central infotainment touchscreen. All models feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and either a 7-inch infotainment screen by Harman or a floating 10.25-inch Infotainment system. Four speakers and two tweeters create an immersive entertainment experience. There is a leather covered steering wheel, push-button start, steering-mounted controls, an electric sunroof (dependent on derivative), and other comfort-enhancing elements, such as over 25 utility spaces, including a cooled glove box on certain derivatives. Keeping those important devices charged is a wireless charger and a fast C-type port

The interior is remarkably spacious, a fact that is enhanced by a flat floor, which adds to the feeling of spaciousness. A centrally located Grand Console with armrest enhances the feeling of space. Automatic Climate Control with Xpress Cool adjusts temperature automatically and rear air conditioner vents are in place to ensure comfort for all occupants. A high seating position is also height-adjustable for the perfect command driving position and enhanced visibility.

A digital instrument cluster projects all driver information with a wireless mobile phone charger also offered on top spec models.

Luggage capacity is complemented by a boot that measures an impressive 366 litres with folding rear seats for additional storage space.

The Tata punch is powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron, three-cylinder engine, featuring DynaPro technology which offers 65kW at 6000rpm and 115Nm at 3 350rpm. The Punch will be available with both a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed Automated Manual Transmission. Stop start is also offered in addition to two driving modes labelled Eco and City on all derivatives.
