It is however important for buyers to be aware that there are used car dealers who's sole aim is to sell their "scrap" at whatever cost. This means an unsuspecting buyer can buy a "heap of trouble" thinking they are buying their dream car. Through our experience, sorting an issue after purchase is a lot harder even with the Legislation Mzansi has. The legislation is designed to protect the rights of the consumer however getting to a point where your matter is resolved can involve a lot of head and heart ache.

Many believe buying a used car means you are buying someone else's trouble. Its therefore important to note of the following points when considering buying a used car:
1. Take someone with you
Take someone with mechanical knowledge to inspect the vehicle for any defects the car might possibly have. An expert can easily detect problems in a car during inspection or during a test drive. This may include:
- Unusual noise when driving. Noise from the wheels (bearing noise), gearbox, suspension etc.
- Leaks when the car is started or after the test drive. Check underneath the car and reverse after a few minutes after parking.
- Worn fanbelts/cambelt are easily seen when inspecting the engine
2. Check body condition
Check the vehicle if it has been in any accident by:
- Looking closely at the vehicle for any color difference
- Check panel to panel for any sudden change in body line.
3. Check vehicle service history
- Ensure vehicle has a service history book
- Check when last was it serviced
- Confirm with the service provider as stamps can be bought
- Confirm which parts were changed and what was done on the car
4. Test drive the vehicle
This allows you to feel the mechanical bits of the car when in use. The following things are important to closely feel during the drive. Important to switch off the radio.
- Clutch bite and feel during gear changes. Clutch bite has to be mid-level when releasing the pedal. Feel for any vibration when you put your foot on the clutch.
- Gearbox condition differs a bit from the clutch in that you will asses the condition from the feel and noise when changing gears. The position of the gear lever when in gear also gives an idea of whether the link between lever and gearbox is good.
- Brake feel given an idea of the braking system condition. A long pedal means the brakes activate long after you have depressed the brake pedal. The "bite" point needs to be instant after pressing pedal.
- Do a full circle turn in both direction to feel and hear any suspension (CV joints) noise
