The GR Supra made its debut in Mzansi (South Africa) back in 2019, featuring an automatic transmission. However, this choice of transmission didn't resonate well with enthusiasts. As a result, there was a demand from passionate car lovers for a more engaging manual transmission option to be offered.

Fast forwad to 2023 and the Mzansi GR team has finally released the manual version of the legendary GR Supra. We drove it at the Zwartkop Raceway.

The cosmetic updates on the new GR Supra MT are minimal, with the focus clearly being on performance rather than looks. The only exterior changes include redesigned 19-inch wheels, red-colored calipers featuring the Supra logo, and additional color choices. Despite the limited cosmetics, the aesthetics remain as captivating as they were in the early stages of the Supra's development.

The cabin experience remained largely unchanged from the automatic variant, until the moment we laid eyes on the flawlessly designed 6-speed manual gear lever. From that point onwards, everything took a thrilling turn… Azkhale!

The technical Zwartkop racetrack provided us with an opportunity to fully explore the capabilities of the new manual transmission. We were extremely impressed with its precision and engagement, especially during quick up and down shifts. The blip function engaged at just the right moment, ensuring that every shift hit the desired intensity. This feature kept us in the optimal rev range, allowing for seamless rev bends at all times.

The performance-oriented 285kW 3.0L straight-six powertrain, known for its high-revving capabilities, coupled with the updated suspension system, delivered an impressive driving experience that felt well-balanced and enhanced confidence during spirited driving maneuvers.

During our test drive, we had the opportunity to experience the GR Supra under regular driving conditions. We were pleasantly surprised by its ability to be reserved when necessary. The suspension provided a noticeably comfortable ride across various road surfaces, making long distance drives less stressful.

The Supra Manual will definitely bring a smile to those that love the art of shifting gears themselves.
