Toyota has responded to the demands of sports car enthusiasts by introducing a manual transmission option for the Toyota GR Supra. The straight-six 3.0-liter engine in the GR Supra has also received a power boost, increasing from 250kW to 285kW. This enhancement applies to both the automatic and manual versions of the car.
Toyota's GR brand, known for its passion for motoring and drawing on the expertise of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, has been expanding with the introduction of the GR Yaris, GR86 Coupe, and the upcoming launch of the GR Corolla. Its addition to the line-up means Toyota now offers all four of its GR models available in South Africa with manual transmission and three pedals either as standard (GR Yaris, GR Corolla) or as an option (GR Supra, GR86).
The GR Supra, launched in 2019, was initially available only with an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, due to persistent demand for a manual gearbox, Toyota developed a new transmission and clutch specifically designed to suit the GR Supra's engine characteristics. The manual transmission variant has undergone engineering modifications to reduce weight and enhance performance, Fitting the new manual gearbox and new 19-inch alloy wheels saves 21.8kg over the outgoing AT model.
The suspension and steering of all GR Supra models have been retuned to optimise performance with the new manual transmission. Measures include adjustments to anti-roll bar bushes, shock absorbers, and the electric power steering system. Traction control has been optimised for smooth operation and improved stability during acceleration and cornering.
To enhance driving enjoyment, Toyota has introduced the Hairpin+ function, which allows for more freedom and enjoyment when navigating tight bends on uphill gradients. Additionally, an anti-roll program has been adopted to prevent sudden loss of grip and improve stability during high-response suspension settings.
The new manual version of the GR Supra features a revised center console and gear shift to accommodate the manual transmission. The layout has been redesigned to ensure optimal ergonomics and precise gear changes. The gear knob has been adjusted to provide a satisfying feel and engagement during shifting.
In terms of aesthetics, the GR Supra range now offers new paint options such as Sapphire Blue and Iridescent Metallic Grey, while some previous colors have been discontinued. The GR Supra is available in two model variants: Manual and Auto.
Toyota provides a 5-services/100,000km service plan and a 3-year/100,000km warranty with the GR Supra. Customers also have the option to purchase extended service plans through their Toyota dealers.
